https://www.paypal.com/IntegrationCenter/ic_micropayments.html PayPal's solution is already active, but currently limited to in-country micropayments. You also need a separate account from your main one.

I've said it before and I'll say it again, this is a good idea. There will always be people willing to, and wanting to, develop for free but it'd be great to have an option that went beyond the 'donate to this project' model which is a very weak call to action for most people.

Not sure if 'topping up' is a good idea, I heard PayPal are planning on having micro-payments down very soon, literally allowing one to charge pennies for an app/tool/add-on.

I think cheap micropayments is the future, and ad-based/subscription models (a la Spotify) for the media producers.

Time will tell but you know I'm right :)

The concept of tucking in a micropayment system into wordpress works well theoretically. As of now 7,306 plugins got downloaded 61,860,600 times. On an average one plugin gets downloaded about 8500 times. The cost of maintaining such a system would present serious infrastructure issues unless a chunk of this is routed back to maintaining the community.

Besides why would users top up for 20£ unless they are going in for mass downloading spree? Wordpress is free. Its better to leave it and its extensions free to the core. Micropayments are still in its primitive stage. The hazard of signing up for a card system, linking it to a valid payment gateway would only be in the agenda of a wantoning user.
