There are some very interesting ideas in this article, but this would still be rather a large leap of faith for a retail dinosaur like Argos. They do appear to have made some good positive steps over recent years with their website, but they currently seem to be stuck in the middle. I foresee that the current halfway house of offline and online activity is going to be with us for many years to come.

I think Alaina and Ross are right that some people will always prefer to browse through a paper catalogue (although I'd question it being a "girl thing" Ross!) and perhaps this is the Argos USP as more and more shopping experiences are conducted online.

Speaking as someone who did the "Argos dance" on Saturday and found it quite hellish (who is it that steals all the tiny pens?!), I'd welcome your suggested changes. It would be interesting to find out what regular offline store users might think of it though.

An interesting article.

Good article and definitely some worthwhile points, but imo Alaina has nailed the key issue here. Although you undoubtedly save a shedload of cash, paper and time ditching the catalogue in favour of electronic, the catalogue plays a key role in Argos (and many other retailers) marketing effort. Maybe its more of a girl thing, but I've seen my fiancee, mum and other female acquaintances' faces light up when they see a new catalogue lying about when they walk into a room, or to stretch the point, when an insert falls out of the newspaper. They pick it up, they flick through it and they might just end up buying something they weren't thinking about until seeing the catalogue....something that just doesn't happen if you go 100% digital. For me that lack of impulse buying from people outwith the buying process is the real area where digital struggles to fully replace the "real thing". We've done similar exercises with Universities moving away from printing thousands of massive Prospectuses in favour of online versions, but all the feedback has been that people like to have something to touch, hold, flick through and keep for reference.

Clever combinations of both digital and older "traditional" mediums is the future in my opinion, not 100% one or the other.

Interesting article - and I agree, the catalogue is outdated and clearly could be update by embracing technology. But unfortunately you'r never going to get away from the reason why my mum likes argos - she can sit in her lounge, casually watching the tv and flicking through the catalogue for xmas ideas :O(

Interesting / useful article. I mean this is central to the customer-purchase experience as well as, of course, the Argos-brand experience in general. The current purchase system really does seem old-fashioned (cumbersome without being quaint). The opportunities for Argos to create an easier-to-purchase experience, as well as digital marketing portal that has a general marketing function as well, is manifold. Argos should get onto it ..
